Paul Affeld est marionnettiste contemporain, auteur, metteur en scène, acteur, performeur, chanteur, saxophoniste, batteur, sculpteur, constructeur de marionnettes, enseignant et père.

Il travaille actuellement sur différents formats destinés aux enfants, aux adolescents et aux adultes restés jeunes d’esprit. Son intérêt particulier porte sur le développement théâtral à la croisée du jeu d’acteur classique, de la marionnette contemporaine et de la danse. Ses pièces Le Petit Chaperon rouge de Frankenstein et Le Cœur de cristal ont notamment été présentées à la Volksbühne Berlin et au Theater an der Parkaue à Berlin.

Aktuell arbeitet Affeld an verschiedenen Formaten für Kinder, Jugendliche und jung gebliebene Erwachsene. Dabei gilt sein besonderes Interesse der theatralen Entwicklung zwischen klassischem Schauspiel, zeitgenössischen Puppenspiel und Tanz. Seine Stücke Frankensteins Rotkäppchen und Das Kristallherz wurden unter anderem in der Volksbühne Berlin und im Theater an der Parkaue in Berlin aufgeführt.

Paul Affeld is a contemporary puppeteer, author, director, actor, performer, singer, saxophonist, drummer, sculptor, puppet maker, lecturer, and father.

Affeld is currently working on various formats for children, young people, and young-at-heart adults. His particular interest lies in theatrical development at the intersection of classical acting, contemporary puppetry, and dance. His productions Frankenstein’s Little Red Riding Hood and The Crystal Heart have been performed, among other venues, at the Volksbühne Berlin and at Theater an der Parkaue in Berlin.

Né à Berlin en 1972, Paul Affeld découvre très tôt son talent et sa passion pour les arts plastiques et les arts de la scène, ainsi que pour la musique. Enfant, il dessine beaucoup, joue de la flûte, réalise à l’âge de 13 ans son premier court métrage de science-fiction en Super 8, apprend la batterie et le saxophone et acquiert, à 16 ans, ses premières expériences de musicien live au sein du groupe de ska dansant The Busters, en tournée dans toute l’Allemagne.

L’échange direct et spontané entre le public et le performeur devient alors le moteur de toute sa création artistique. Il devient membre du collectif de performance Honey sucker company, fonde son premier groupe Fever, avec lequel il tourne jusqu’à Tokyo, et étudie le jeu d’acteur et la marionnette à la Académie Ernst Busch d’art dramatique à Berlin.

Après l’obtention de son diplôme en 1995, il fonde avec le musicien Alexander Tiller le groupe Puppetmastaz, une formation hip-hop de six membres représentée exclusivement par des marionnettes à main interprétant des performances de rap en direct sur la musique d’un DJ. Avec le personnage Mr. Maloke, une taupe coiffée d’un grand haut-de-forme, Affeld devient le cœur du groupe et acquiert une renommée internationale. En tant que premier « live toy group », Puppetmastaz connaît un grand succès avec jusqu’à 5 000 spectateurs par représentation, notamment en France, en Chine et au Japon.

Au cours de vingt années d’existence, Affeld développe trente personnages de marionnettes différents, participe en tant que musicien à neuf albums, et effectue des tournées en Allemagne ainsi qu’en Suède, Russie, France, Espagne, Pologne, aux Pays-Bas, en Angleterre, au Brésil, aux États-Unis, en Chine et au Japon.

En tant qu’enseignant, Affeld propose également des ateliers de marionnette et de construction de marionnettes pour enfants et adultes.

Geboren 1972 in Berlin, entdeckte Affeld sein Talent und seine Leidenschaft für bildendende und darstellende Künste, wie auch für Musik bereits mit sehr jungen Jahren. Als Kind zeichnete er viel, spielte Flöte, drehte mit 13 Jahren seinen ersten Science-Fiction Kurzfilm auf Super 8, lernte Schlagzeug und Saxophon und sammelte im Alter von 16 Jahren seine ersten Erfahrungen als Live-Musiker der deutschlandweit tourenden Ska-Tanz-Kapelle the Busters.

Der direkte und spontane Austausch zwischen Publikum und Performer sollte fortan die treibende Kraft all seines künstlerischen Schaffens werden. Er wurde er Mitglied der Performance-Künstlergruppe Honey sucker company, gründete seine erste eigene Band Fever, mit der er bis nach Tokio tourte und studierte Schauspiel und Puppenspiel an der Ernst Busch Hochschule in Berlin.

1995 nach Abschluss des Studiums gründete er zusammen mit dem Musiker Alexander Tiller die Band Puppetmastaz – eine sechsköpfige Hip-Hop-Formation, deren Bandmitglieder ausschließlich durch Handpuppen, die Live-Rap-Einlagen zur Musik eines DJs vortrugen, vertreten wurden. Affeld bildete mit der Figur Mr. Maloke, einem Maulwurf mit einem großen Zylinder, das Herz der Band und wurde damit international bekannt. Als erste Live-Toy-Group fand Puppetmastaz mit bis zu 5.000 Zuschauern pro Show insbesondere in Frankreich, China und Japan sehr großen Zuspruch. 

In den zwanzig Jahren ihres Bestehens entwickelte Affeld dreißig verschiedene Puppen-Charaktere, wirkte als Musiker an insgesamt 9 Sound-Alben mit, tourte deutschlandweit, in Schweden, Russland, Frankreich, Spanien, Polen, Holland, England, Brasilien, USA, China und Japan.

In seiner Funktion als Dozent bietet Affeld zudem Puppenspiel- und Puppenbaukurse für Kinder und Erwachsene an.

Born in Berlin in 1972, Paul Affeld discovered his talent and passion for visual and performing arts as well as music at a very young age. As a child, he drew extensively, played the flute, shot his first science fiction short film on Super 8 at the age of 13, learned to play drums and saxophone, and at 16 gained his first experience as a live musician with the nationally touring ska dance band The Busters.

From then on, direct and spontaneous exchange between audience and performer became the driving force behind all his artistic work. He became a member of the performance art group Honey sucker company, founded his first own band Fever, with which he toured as far as Tokyo, and studied acting and puppetry at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin.

After completing his studies in 1995, he co-founded the band Puppetmastaz together with musician Alexander Tiller. The six-member hip-hop formation was represented exclusively by hand puppets performing live rap to DJ music. With the character Mr. Maloke, a mole wearing a large top hat, Affeld formed the heart of the band and achieved international recognition. As the world’s first live toy group, Puppetmastaz attracted audiences of up to 5,000 per show, particularly in France, China, and Japan.

Over the course of twenty years, Affeld developed thirty different puppet characters, contributed as a musician to a total of nine sound albums, and toured extensively throughout Germany as well as Sweden, Russia, France, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, England, Brazil, the United States, China, and Japan.

In his role as a lecturer, Affeld also offers puppetry and puppet-building workshops for children and adults.
